DJI M350 and LW20/C: Landing on a Moving Platform

At LightWare LiDAR, we are committed to empowering developers and drone operators by providing cutting-edge solutions to enhance the capabilities of their drones.

To support this mission, we have developed a comprehensive guide on integrating our high-performance MicroLiDAR® distance sensors into DJI systems. This integration unlocks advanced functionality, making it possible to achieve precision landing on moving platforms—a previously unavailable feature in DJI’s closed technology stack.

This marks LightWare’s first official solution for DJI users, developed in collaboration with a renowned engineering expert and former member of DJI’s product research team. It brings new advanced capabilities to the DJI M350 – a true workhorse in the industry.

Landing on a moving platform

LightWare’s first DJI integration focuses on adding a critical capability to the DJI M350 – the ability to land on a moving platform.

DJI drones do not natively support landing on dynamic surfaces, which limits their use in high-mobility applications. This integration extends the DJI M350’s capabilities to land safely on moving ground, aerial, or marine platforms. In this guide, we focus on maritime landings, a relatable, but complex use case.

This feature is essential for industries requiring precision landings in dynamic environments, such as offshore inspections, shipboard drone operations, and other scenarios where landing accuracy is critical.

Use case example

A typical use case is landing on a seaborne vessel. The drone must land on the deck of a moving boat – where even slight miscalculations in positioning or timing could result in a failed or unsafe landing.

With LightWare’s LiDAR technology, the DJI M350 gains the ability to analyze the movement of the boat autonomously and in real-time, assess the landing surface, and execute a safe landing even in challenging conditions.

The Guide

By following our step-by-step guide, you will learn how to integrate LW20/C sensors into the DJI M350 to achieve a real-time understanding of the ground plane.

The guide covers:

  • Required hardware and modifications
  • LW20/C sensor configuration
  • Code implementation to create a real-time mapping system

Through this process, you will enable the DJI M350 to detect and adapt to the constantly changing conditions of the deck.

Final Thoughts

This breakthrough pushes the boundaries of what’s possible with DJI drones, offering new opportunities for advanced drone operations. We invite you to explore this guide, test its applications, and take your DJI M350 to the next level.
